Context:

In Kosovo, the unemployment level reached 31% in the second quarter of 2017 and largely concerned young people (51%). The weight of the informal economy represents at least a third of GDP.

The Institution:

The Kosovo Finance Agency (AFK) is a Tier 2 microfinance institution. In 2002, AFK was registered as an independent NGO from Mercy Corps and obtained the MFI status in 2011. AFK aims at improving living conditions in Kosovo by providing access to sustainable financial services for micro and small enterprises.

Impact:

AFK aims to promote the development of rural areas as well as women entrepreneurs and minorities. The institution serves 19,300 active borrowers (22% of them women and 51% of them located in rural areas) and manages a portfolio of € 36 million. It operates in almost the entire country through a network of 20 agencies and 118 employees.
